  • Consent for Minors: Must wait for legal guardian, except in emergency situations
  • Consent of Mentally Ill: Section 12, danger to self or others, use MOLST form

Airway, Breathing, Circulation (ABCs)

  • Function of Respiratory System: Provide oxygen, remove carbon dioxide
  • Diaphragm separates chest and abdomen
  • Head Tilt Chin Lift and Jaw Thrust Maneuver open airways
  • Oral Airways: For unconscious patients without gag reflex
  • Signs of Breathing: 12-20 breaths per minute

Arrival on Scene

  • Perform Visual Survey of Scene
  • Provide Verbal Picture to Desk Officer
  • Update EMS with Age, Sex, Level of Responsiveness, ABCs
  • Use SAMPLE format for reporting

Body Systems

  • Skeletal System: Support, Structure, Manufacture RBCs, Assist Movement
  • Types of Muscles: Voluntary, Involuntary, Cardiac
  • Nervous System: Governs Body Functions
  • Skin: Protects, Regulates, Transmits

Assessment

  • APVU: Alert, Verbal, Pain, Unresponsive
  • Pupils: Unequal sizes indicate possible stroke, constricted or dilated pupils have specific meanings

Shock

  • State of Cardiovascular Collapse, inadequate blood delivery to organs
  • More trauma patients die from shock than any other means

Circulatory System

  • Functions: Pumps, Pipes, Fluid
  • Types of Burns: 1st, 2nd, 3rd degree, with corresponding characteristics

Medical Emergencies

  • Definition: Illness or injury requiring urgent help
  • Patient feeling unwell, abnormal vital signs
  • Seizures: Sudden electrical brain impulses
  • Chest Pain: Stop activity, rest, and use nitro if needed

Cardiac Emergencies

  • Heart Attack: Complete cessation of heartbeat, use CPR and oxygen
  • Congestive Heart Failure: Heart failure to pump adequately, congestion in blood vessels
  • Stroke: Leading cause of brain injury, caused by blood clots, facial droop and arm drift are signs
