Conjunctiva
- The conjunctiva lines the inner surface of the eyelids and covers the sclera.
- It is a transparent mucous membrane.
- The conjunctiva is critical for maintaining the health of the eye.
Parts of the Conjunctiva
- The conjunctival sac is the space between the eyelids and the eyeball.
- The conjunctiva has three main parts:
- Palpebral conjunctiva: Lines the inner surface of the eyelids.
- Bulbar conjunctiva: Covers the sclera.
- Limbal conjunctiva: The junction between the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva.
Sulcus Subtarsalis
- The sulcus subtarsalis is a groove between the tarsal conjunctiva and the palpebral conjunctiva.
- It is a deep groove that runs along the upper and lower eyelids.
Conjunctival Sac
- The conjunctival sac holds approximately 7 microliters of tear fluid.
- It can accommodate up to 30 microliters of tear fluid.
- The dimensions of the conjunctival sac vary depending on the location measured.
Histology of the Conjunctiva
- The conjunctiva is composed of stratified squamous epithelium, with a basement membrane, stroma and a superficial layer of goblet cells.
- Goblet cells secrete mucin, essential for maintaining a healthy tear film.
Squamous Metaplasia
- Squamous metaplasia is a change in the conjunctiva, where goblet cells are replaced by squamous cells.
- It can be triggered by chronic inflammation or irritation.
Accessory Lacrimal Glands
- Accessory lacrimal glands help to produce tears contributing to the tear film.
- These glands are located in the conjunctiva, contributing to maintaining eye moisture.
Conjunctival Arteries
- Conjunctival arteries include the anterior ciliary artery and the posterior conjunctival artery.
- These arteries supply blood to the conjunctiva.
