Study Notes
Conduction System
- The depolarization wave is initiated by the sinoatrial (SA) node.
- The wave then passes through the atrial myocardium.
- The depolarization wave then spreads to the atrioventricular (AV) node, followed by atrial contraction.
- The wave then passes rapidly through the AV bundle.
- The wave continues on through the right and left bundle branches, and then to the Purkinje fibers in the ventricular walls, resulting in a contraction that ejects blood, leaving the heart.
Cardiac Cycle
- The cardiac cycle refers to the events of one complete heartbeat.
- During the cardiac cycle, both atria and ventricles contract and then relax.
- The cardiac cycle consists of systole and diastole.
Heart Contraction and Relaxation
- Systole means heart contraction.
- Diastole means heart relaxation.
Heart Sounds
- The first heart sound, “lub”, is caused by the closing of the AV valves.
- The second heart sound, “dub”, occurs when the semilunar valves close at the end of systole.
