8 Questions

What is the main advantage of high-speed connectivity services such as DSL and cable modem access?

They provide instant access and do not require a connection to be established for each session

What is the primary function of the ping command?

To test network connectivity

What is the purpose of the internal loopback test?

To verify the operation of the TCP/IP stack and NIC transmit/receive function

What is the purpose of pinging the default gateway IP address?

To verify whether the router that connects the local network to other networks can be reached

What is the primary function of TCP/IP?

To allow cooperating computers to share resources across a network

What is the main difference between high-speed connectivity services and dial-up connectivity?

High-speed connectivity services are always on and do not require a connection to be established for each session

What is the purpose of pinging the IP address of a host computer?

To verify the TCP/IP address configuration for the local host and connectivity to the host

What is the main advantage of using TCP/IP?

It allows cooperating computers to share resources across a network

Study Notes

Networking and Number Systems

  • High-speed internet services, such as Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and cable modem access, have transitioned from corporate environments to consumer markets.
  • These services are "always on," providing instant access and do not require a connection to be established for each session, resulting in greater reliability and flexibility.
  • They have led to the ease of internet connection sharing by small office and home networks.

TCP/IP

  • Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is a set of protocols or rules that allow cooperating computers to share resources across a network.
  • TCP/IP enables computers to share resources and communicate with each other over a network.

Testing Connectivity with Ping

  • The ping command sends multiple IP packets to a specified destination, requesting a reply from each packet.
  • Ping is used to test the NIC (Network Interface Card) transmit/receive function, TCP/IP configuration, and network connectivity.
  • Internal loopback test: ping 127.0.0.1 verifies the operation of the TCP/IP stack and NIC transmit/receive function.
  • Ping can be used to verify:
    • Local host and connectivity to the host using the host's IP address.
    • Connectivity to the default gateway using the gateway's IP address.
    • Connectivity to a remote host using the remote host's IP address.

Network Math

  • Binary presentation of data is used to represent alpha-numeric data in a computer.
  • The American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) is the most commonly used code for representing alpha-numeric data in a computer.

This quiz covers computer networking concepts, number systems, and logic gates. It also touches on high-speed and dial-up connectivity.
