Study Notes

Computers

  • The first commercially available computer was UNIVAC, made by the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Company, marking the birth of modern computers.
  • Intel Corporation designed the first general-purpose programmable processor, INTEL 4004, in 1969.

Generations of Computers

  • First Generation (1946-1959): Used vacuum tubes, occupied large spaces, and performed computations in milliseconds. Examples include EDSAC, EDVAC, UNIVAC, IBM-701, and IBM-650.
  • Second Generation (1959-1965): Replaced vacuum tubes with transistors.

Storage Devices

  • DVD (Digital Versatile Disc): A device used to store data in large amounts, holding approximately 17GB of video, sound, or other data.
  • Blu-ray Disc (BD-ROM): An upgraded version of CD and DVD discs, with a maximum capacity of 25GB (single layer) and 50GB (dual layer).
  • Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD): A holographic storage format with a maximum capacity of 3.9 terabytes.
  • Flash Drives: Small, ultra-portable storage devices connecting to computers via a built-in USB plug, with storage capacities ranging from 8GB to 64GB.
  • Zip Disks: An advanced version of floppy disks, developed by Iomega, available in 100, 250-MB, and 750-MB capacities.

Memory and Input/Output Devices

  • Cache Memory: A high-speed semiconductor memory that acts as a buffer between the CPU and main memory.
  • Virtual Memory: Permits software to use additional memory by utilizing the hard disk drive (HDD) as temporary storage.
  • Mouse: A pointing and cursor-control device with two or three buttons (left, right, and middle).
  • Joy Stick: Used to move the cursor position, mainly in Computer Aided Design (CAD) and gaming.
  • Track Ball: Mostly used in notebooks or laptops, with a ball that senses movement and sends signals to the CPU.
  • Scanner: Captures images from printed material and converts them into digital format, with types including Flatbed Scanners, Hand Scanners, and Sheetfed Scanners.

Database Management Systems (DBMS)

  • Physical Level/Internal Level: Describes how data is physically stored, using methods like B+ tree and Hash file organization.
  • Logical Level/Conceptual Level: Describes what data is stored and the relationships among it, with database administrators working at this level.
  • View Level/External Level: The highest level of abstraction, viewed by the user in terms of tables and relations, describing a part of the entire database and hiding logical level details.

Keys in DBMS

  • Key: A field in the database table used to retrieve and sort rows, speeding up data access and creating links between tables.
  • Super Key: A set of one or more attributes that uniquely determine each entity in the database table, a subset of a candidate key.
  • Candidate Key: A set of columns from which a primary key can be selected to identify each record.
  • Primary Key: A special key that uniquely identifies each record in the table.

Microsoft Office

  • Clipboard Group: Copy, Paste, Cut, and Format Painter.
  • Font Group: Font style, color, and size, with options for Bold, Underline, and Strikethrough.
  • Paragraph Group: Bullets and Numbering, Alignment, Shading, Borders, and Line spacing.
  • Style Group: Listed Styles.
  • Editing Group: Find, Replace, etc.

Insert Tab

  • Pages Group: Cover page, Blank page, and Page break.
  • Tables Group: Tables.
  • Illustrations Group: Pictures, Shapes, Smart Art, etc.
  • Media and Links Group: Hyperlink, Bookmark, etc.
  • Header and Footer Group: Page number, Header, Footer.
  • Text Group: Text Box, Word Art, etc.
  • Symbol Group: Equation, Symbol.

Design Tab

  • Themes: Change colors, fonts, and effects for the document.
  • Style Set gallery: Change styles.
  • Paragraph Spacing: Adjust paragraph spacing.
  • Effects: Apply effects to the document.
  • Page Background group: Watermark, page color, and page borders.
