Study Notes
Computer Hardware Components
- Hard-disk drive: a storage device that stores billions of characters of data on a non-removable disk
- Joy Stick: a hand-held control stick that allows a player to control the movements of a cursor on a computer screen or a symbol in a video game
- LAN Card: Local Area Network interface card
- Multi-tester: an instrument used to measure voltage, current, and resistance
- NIC (Network Interface Card): a PC expansion board that plugs into a personal computer or server and works with the network operating system to control the flow of information over the network
- Printer: a piece of hardware that produces a paper copy (also known as ‘hardcopy’) of the information generated by the computer
Networking and Operating System
- Network: a communications system connecting two or more computers
- Peers: any computer sharing the same protocol layer with another computer
- Operating System (OS): software that controls the allocation and use of programs and data that a computer uses
Safety Precautions
- Always ground or discharge yourself before touching any part of the computer
- Do not work alone, have someone nearby in case of accident or emergency
- Be careful with tools that may cause short circuits
- Always hold cable connectors by the handle, not the cable itself
- Wear rubber shoes when standing on the ground or concrete floor
- Ensure pins are properly aligned when connecting a cable connector
- Always power off and unplug the computer before working on it
- Keep liquids away from the working area or near computers
- Take contingency measures during workplace accidents, fire, and other emergencies
- Use personal protective equipment correctly
- Identify and minimize hazards in the workplace
- Protect computer components from damage caused by Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
- Hold components by edges and avoid touching ICs
- Read and follow instructions on the manual carefully
- Avoid using excessive force if things do not quite slip into place
