Computer Data Storage

Computer data storage is a combination of computer components and recording media that store data digitally.
Storage devices can be categorized into permanent and temporary storage.

Primary Storage (RAM)

Random Access Memory (RAM) is the primary storage medium in a computer.
RAM temporarily stores data and helps in everyday tasks, such as running software, opening media files, and playing games.
More RAM means a smoother and faster multitasking experience.
Data stored in RAM is deleted when the computer is turned off.

Secondary Storage

Every computer has secondary storage, which stores information permanently.
Common secondary storage media include Hard Disk Drives (HDD) and Solid State Drives (SSD).
HDDs use spinning disks to read and write data magnetically and are commonly used due to their affordability and high data storage capacity.

Speed: Data transfer speed is generally faster with local storage devices.
Full control and security: Physically owning the storage means having full control over security measures, file organization, and user permissions.
Portability: Physical storage devices can be carried during travel, enabling access to data at any time and place.
Data Sharing: Physical storage devices can be lent to trusted individuals for direct data sharing.

Challenges of Physical Storage

Risk of data loss or damage: Physical storage devices can be stolen, damaged, or affected by disasters, leading to data loss.
Inaccessibility: Physical storage devices can be inaccessible during power outages, network issues, or other obstacles.
Need for Expertise and Maintenance: Physical storage often requires IT expertise, which can be an additional cost for businesses.
