Study Notes
Components of a Computer
- A computer is a multipurpose electronic device that receives, stores, processes data, and delivers information.
- Computers have four key components: hardware, software, data, and users.
Hardware
- Hardware is any part of a computer that can be physically touched.
- Input hardware takes data into the system (examples: keyboard, mouse, scanner, joystick, microphone, webcam, barcode reader).
- Output hardware displays the results of data processing (examples: monitor, printer, speaker, projector, headphones).
- Processing and memory hardware performs tasks needed to process and utilize data to achieve a given objective (examples: processor, RAM).
- Secondary storage hardware stores data permanently (examples: hard disk, state drive, pen drive).
Software
- Software is a collection of programs, procedures, and documentation used to perform tasks on a computer.
- Application software are programs that perform a specific task.
- System software manages computer activities (examples are various operating systems like iOS, Windows, Android, etc.)
Data
- Data is a set or multiple sets of information used to generate a desired result.
- Data consists of raw facts and figures for input into a computer.
- Data is measured in bytes.
- A byte consists of 8 adjacent binary digits (bits).
- A bit is the smallest unit of data that a computer can process and store.
- Bits are always in one of two states: on or off (similar to a light switch).
Users
- Users are people who utilize, maintain, and manipulate computers.
- Peopleware includes all aspects of a user, especially their human role in the IT system.
- Different roles exist within users
- Programmers: write software programs to allow users to interact with the system.
- System Analysts: design and manage data processing and solve arising problems within data processing.
- End-users: the general people who interact with the computer systems for various tasks (playing games, documents work, etc.)
- Users interact with computers through a hierarchy of layers: hardware—software—data—users.
