Schema Therapy
- Developed in 1990 by Jeffrey Young
- Expansion on CBT
- Initially developed to treat clients with entrenched, chronic psychological disorders, particularly Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
- Blends CBT, attachment theory, object relations, Gestalt, constructivist & psychoanalytic theories.
Why Schema Therapy was Needed
- Some clients cannot delay gratification for future benefits.
- Clients may have low frustration tolerance.
- They may have difficulty regulating expression or impulses.
- Some clients feel superior to others.
- Clients may not feel bound by reciprocity rules.
Impaired Limits
- Typical family of origin may be overly permissive & indulgent.
- These children were not required to follow rules.
- They may not consider others.
- They may not develop self-control.
Impaired Limits - Schemas
- Entitlement/Grandiosity: Belief of superiority and entitlement to special rights and privileges.
- They are demanding, dominating and lack empathy.
- Rules of reciprocity don't apply to them.
- Insufficient Self-Control/Self-Discipline: Inability or unwillingness to exercise self-control and frustration tolerance to achieve goals.
- They may not regulate emotions or impulses.
Other-Directedness
- Excessive emphasis on meeting the needs of others than own needs.
- This may be done to gain approval, maintain emotional connection, or avoid retaliation
- They may be focused on the responses of others rather than their own needs.
- They may lack awareness of their own anger and preferences.
