Community Diagnosis (CDx) Overview
- CDx is an in-depth process to determine community profiles, health status, and factors influencing the present condition
- There are two types: Comprehensive and Problem-Oriented
Types of CDx
- Comprehensive CDx aims to obtain general information about the community
- Problem-Oriented CDx is an assessment that addresses a specific need
Elements of Comprehensive CDx: Demographic Variables
- Analysis of the community's demographic characteristics
- Shows the size, composition, and geographical distribution of the population
- Includes total population and geographical distribution, including urban-rural index and population density
- Also includes age and sex composition, vital indicators, patterns of migration and population projections
Elements of Comprehensive CDx: Socio-Economic and Cultural Variables
- Considers socio-economic and cultural factors that may directly or indirectly affect health status
- Includes: communication network, transportation, educational level, housing conditions, poverty level income, unemployment and underemployment rates
- Also includes proportion of salaried and wage earners, types of industry and occupation common in the community
Elements of Comprehensive CDx: Environmental Indicators
- Considers physical, geographical, and topographical characteristics
- Assesses water supply, waste disposal, air, water, and land pollution
Elements of Comprehensive CDx: Cultural Factors
- Variables break people into groups within the community
- Ethnicity, social class, language, religion, race, political orientation, cultural beliefs/practices that affect health, and concept about health and illness, are all cultural factors
Elements of Comprehensive CDx: Health and Illness Patterns
- Collects primary data on leading causes of illness/death and their occurrence rates
- Recent and reliable secondary data can also be used
- Includes leading causes of mortality, morbidity, infant mortality and maternal mortality, and hospital admissions

- Health resources are essential for delivering basic health services
- Determine manpower and material resources, and resources provided by the government, NGOs, and other institutions

- Vital for achieving a high level of wellness
- Reflects the action potential of the state and its people
- Addresses health needs/problems and mirrors the government's sensitivity to people's struggles for better lives
Steps in Community Diagnosis
- Preparation involves identifying the barangay and conducting an ocular survey
- Ocular survey includes courtesy calls, identifying key leaders/BHWs, surveying households, and starting a spot map
- Community Assembly: inform people about the purpose, and disseminate initial findings, especially about infectious diseases
- Conduct survey using the correct format;
- Includes random sampling (10% of population) or saturation (house-to-house)
- Develop guidelines for filling out the survey form and data collection techniques
Steps in Community Diagnosis: Data Presentation
- Make graphs or charts from the data gathered
- Analyze and interpret data
- Prepare an Action/Project Plan
Sources of Data
- Data can be sourced from Health Centers, National Statistics Office, Municipal Hall Planning Division, Barangay Hall, etc
Types of Community Health Problems
- Health Status Problems described in terms of morbidity, mortality, fertility, or wellness capability
- Health Resource Problems described by lack of manpower, money, materials, or institutions
- Health-related Problems described by social, economic, environmental and political factors that aggravate illness-inducing situations
Criteria for Priority-Setting
- Nature of the condition/problem relates to health status, health resources, and health-related problems
- Magnitude of the problem refers to the severity and proportion of the population affected
- Modifiability of the problem is the probability of reducing, controlling, or eradicating it
- Preventive Potential is the probability of controlling or reducing the effects
- Social Concern is the population's perception of and readiness to act on the problem
