Common Pulse Sites
-
Radial Pulse
Located at the wrist, approximately one inch below the base of the thumb. This site is the most frequently used for taking pulses. -
Brachial Pulse
Found at the inner aspect of the elbow, specifically in the antecubital fossa. This pulse is commonly assessed when measuring blood pressure. -
Carotid Pulse
Situated at the side of the neck, between the larynx and the sternocleidomastoid muscle. This site is essential for performing CPR as it can be felt clearly during emergencies. -
Temporal Pulse
Located just above the ear on the head. It provides a key site for assessing circulation in the head area. -
Femoral Pulse
Can be found in the groin area where the femoral artery is accessible before it travels to the leg. Important for circulation assessment in the lower body. -
Popliteal Pulse
Detected behind the knee. The pulse is felt deeply and is best assessed with the knee slightly bent. -
Posterior Tibial Pulse
Located on the medial side of the ankle, near the ankle bone. This pulse helps evaluate circulation in the lower leg. -
Dorsalis Pedis Pulse
Found on the top of the foot, slightly lateral to the midline. It aids in assessing adequate blood circulation to the foot. -
Apical Pulse
Situated at the apex of the heart, typically to the left of the sternum in the 4th or 5th intercostal space, just below the nipple. Useful for direct heart rate measurement.
