Definition of Combustion and Flame

Combustion refers to the chemical reaction between oxygen and fuel, resulting in heat, light, and often smoke. A flame is essentially a visible manifestation of this process in which the gases involved give off visible light through incandescence, while also emitting or absorbing infrared radiation within the Earth's atmosphere, making it appear yellowish or orange when seen against a dark background. Essentially, if you can see it, smell it, taste it, feel it or hear it, it has undergone some form of combustion.

The Three Stages of Combustion

The combustion process typically involves three stages: drying, volatilization, and oxidation. In brief, the fuel must evaporate first before it can burn. This happens during drying. Then, the vapors from the liquid fuel mix with air and heat up above their boiling point without burning (volatilizing). When the temperature rises to ignition temperature, a spark is needed, and the fuel turns into flames (oxidation), setting off a chain reaction.

How Fuel Is Consumed During Combustion

Fuels consist of hydrogen and oxygen atoms bonded together in various ways. Combustion breaks these bonds, releasing energy as heat. For example, methane gas (CH4) produces carbon dioxide (CO2) when burned, and releases large amounts of energy. Similarly, octane (C8H18) forms C8O4H12 when burned. In all cases, the original fuels are converted back into elements like carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen.
