Flashcards

Munsell System

A 3D model for color analysis methodology, for each color analyzes hue, value, and chroma.

Hue (Munsell)

The color around the perimeter of the Munsell sphere.

Value (Munsell)

In Munsell, the lightness, from top (light) to bottom (dark).

Chroma (Munsell)

In Munsell, it describes how much the color moves toward the center.

Study Notes

Color Theories in Design

  • Numerous attempts have been undertaken to establish methodologies for evaluating color combinations.
  • Main color theories include: Munsell System, Natural Color System (NCS) and Pantone Color System.
  • Additional color systems have been developed.

Munsell System

  • Albert Munsell developed a three-dimensional model of color analysis.
  • Analysis is based on the methodology for each color's hue, value, and chroma.
  • Key components include:
  • Hue: Arranged around the perimeter of a sphere.
  • Value: Changes from the top (light) to the bottom pole (dark).
  • Chroma: Moves toward the center.
  • The system is based on five principal hues and five intermediate hues.
  • The ten major hues are arranged horizontally in a circle.
  • A specific color can be identified with a hue, value, or chroma (H V/C).
  • Colors in the system can be defined with a numerical scale for HVC.
  • Red, for example, would be represented as (5R 6/12):
  • (5) is the hue (red).
  • (6) is the value.
  • (12) is the chroma.

Natural Color System (NCS)

  • NCS states that there are six elementary color percepts of human vision, with the psychological primaries often proposed by the hypothesis of color opponency.
  • These primaries are white, black, red, yellow, green, and blue.
  • The last four are called unique hues.
  • All six are defined as elementary colors.

Pantone Color System

  • Pantone provides interior designers a way to specify, communicate, and manage color choices for various materials used in architecture and interiors.
  • The majority of Pantone colors are generated with thirteen base pigments.
  • Each unique color is labeled via a number, reducing the chance of color inconsistencies.
  • The Pantone colors palette includes over 1,800 different colors.

Mixing Colors

  • Two categories include: additive colors and subtractive colors.

Additive Colors

  • Produced by combining wavelengths of red, green, and blue (RGB).
  • Light or additive primaries contain all the wavelengths needed to produce white light.
  • Applicable in lighting, such as theater lighting to produce different colors.
  • Utilized for there presentation of colored images in electronic systems.
  • Including televisions, computers, cellphones, web colors, and video projectors and similar items.
  • Additive color devices produce images composed of red, green, and blue light.

Subtractive Colors

  • Produced by mixing cyan, yellow, and magenta pigments, dyes, or other colorants.
  • Each absorbs certain wavelengths.
  • A balanced mixture of these colorants or subtractive primaries theoretically yields black.
  • Black results as all wavelengths of visible light are absorbed.
  • The CMY (cyan, magenta, yellow) color model is a subtractive model used in color printing and painting.
