Cognitive Disorders Key Terms
- Agnosia: Inability to recognize or name objects despite intact sensory abilities.
- Alzheimer's Disease: Progressive brain disorder with gradual onset, causing increasing decline in functioning (speech, motor, personality). Characterized by paranoia, delusions, hallucinations, hygiene neglect, and belligerence.
- Amnestic Disorder: Deterioration of memory function.
- Aphasia: Deterioration of language function.
- Apraxia: Impaired ability to execute motor functions despite intact motor abilities.
- Confabulation: Making up answers to fill in memory gaps, often due to organic brain problems.
- Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE): Brain injury from repeated concussions, common in sports like boxing and football.
- Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease: Central nervous system disorder, usually appearing in adults (40-60), affecting vision, coordination, and causing dementia.
- Delirium: Disturbance of consciousness accompanied by changes in cognition.
- Dementia: Multiple cognitive deficits, initially affecting memory, progressively impacting all cognitive functions.
- Distraction: Shifting client's attention & energy to a different topic.
- Executive Functioning: The ability to think abstractly, plan, sequence, monitor, and stop complex behavior.
- Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration: Degenerative brain disease affecting frontal and temporal lobes, resembling Alzheimer's in its symptoms.
