Piaget’s Cognitive
Development Theory
- Schema is a concept or mental framework used to organize and interpret information.
- Assimilation is the process of incorporating new information into existing schemas.
- Accommodation is the process of modifying existing schemas to accommodate new information.
Sensorimotor Stage
- This stage occurs from birth to nearly 2 years of age.
- Infants explore the world through their senses.
- Object permanence develops during this stage: the understanding that objects continue to exist even when they are hidden.
- Stranger anxiety develops during this stage: the fear of unfamiliar people.
Preoperational Stage
- This stage occurs from about 2 to 7 years of age.
