Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Notification
- Notification dated 18th January 2019
- Aims to conserve and protect coastal environment, support local communities, and promote sustainable development
- Considers natural hazards, sea level rise, and global warming
- Excludes Andaman, Nicobar, and Lakshadweep Islands and their surrounding marine areas
CRZ Area Classification
- CRZ-I areas are most critical and require further classification
- CRZ-IA includes ecologically sensitive areas and geomorphological features (e.g., mangroves >1000 sq.mts, corals, sand dunes, biologically-active mudflats, national parks, marine parks, sanctuaries, reserve forests, wildlife habitats)
- A 50-meter buffer zone is required around mangroves larger than 1000 sq.mts
- CRZ-IB includes the intertidal zone, i.e., between low tide line (LTL) and high tide line (HTL)
