Study Notes
Cloud Services
- Cloud Services manages access to services according to client requirements
- Cloud computing offers three types of services: Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
Software as a Service (SaaS)
- Also known as cloud application services
- Runs directly through web browsers, eliminating the need for downloads and installations
- Characteristics:
- Managed from a central location
- Hosted on a remote server
- Accessible over the internet
- Users are not responsible for hardware and software updates
- Updates are applied automatically
- Purchased on a pay-as-per-use basis
- Examples: BigCommerce, Google Apps, Salesforce, Dropbox, ZenDesk, Cisco WebEx, Slack, and GoToMeeting
Platform as a Service (PaaS)
- Also known as cloud platform services
- Provides a platform for software creation
- Characteristics:
- Accessible to various users via the same development application
- Integrates with web services and databases
- Builds on virtualization technology for scalable resources
- Supports multiple languages and frameworks
- Provides an ability to "Auto-scale"
- Examples: AWS Elastic Beanstalk, Windows Azure, Heroku, Force.com, Google App Engine, Apache Stratos, Magento Commerce Cloud, and OpenShift
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
- Also known as cloud infrastructure services
- Manages applications data, middleware, and runtime environments
- Owned, managed, and operated by one or more organizations in the community, a third party, or a combination of them
- Example: Health Care community cloud
Community Cloud
- Advantages:
- Cost-effective
- Suitable for organizations with collaborative cloud needs
- Provides better security than public cloud
- Offers collaborative and distributive environment
- Allows sharing of cloud resources, infrastructure, and capabilities among organizations
- Disadvantages:
- Not suitable for every organization
- Security features not as good as private cloud
- Not suitable for non-collaborative environments
- Fixed amount of data storage and bandwidth is shared among community members
Cloud Models
- Multi-cloud: uses multiple public cloud providers
- Azure Arc: a set of technologies to manage cloud environments
History of Cloud Computing
- Emerged from Client/Server computing and distributed computing
- Idea of computing as a utility proposed by John MacCharty in 1961
- Salesforce.com started delivering applications over the internet in 1999
- Amazon started Amazon Web Services in 2002, providing storage, computation, and human intelligence services
