Study Notes
Climate change is a global issue caused by human activities that significantly alter the Earth's natural environment. One of the most alarming consequences of climate change is its impact on our current planetary ecosystem. Temperatures have been steadily rising due largely to greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane. These gases trap heat from the sun within the atmosphere causing what we know today as global warming.
The changes resulting from this phenomenon can be devastating if left unchecked. Rising sea levels pose a threat to coastal cities such as New York, Miami, London, Lagos, Amsterdam, Dhaka, Alexandria, Shanghai, Mumbai, Sydney, Tokyo, and more. Ocean acidification has also become increasingly concerning; it is dangerous because it disrupts the balance of marine life organisms including fish, coral reefs, shellfish, clams, oysters, shrimp, crabs, lobsters, and many other animals living near the ocean bottom. In addition, there will likely be an increase in extreme weather events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, droughts, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis.
Climate change increases pollution and creates health hazards. For instance, air quality worsens when smog prevents sunlight from reaching the ground which causes plants to die off quickly leading to less oxygen in the air. Water pollution results when chemicals used to produce crops wash into streams where they destroy aquatic habitats damaging food chains. Additionally, water sources may dry up, leaving people without access to clean drinking water. There are also potential threats related to climate change like famines, wars over resources, and even pandemics. Finally, animal species could go extinct due to habitat loss and changing climates.
In conclusion, climate change poses various challenges and risks to humans and the world around us. It affects everything from the air you breathe to the safety of your home town. As such, taking action now is crucial to prevent further damage to our earthly home.
