Study Notes

Climate Change and Health

  • Around 1,000 children are predicted to die annually from diarrhea related to infectious diseases caused by climate change by 2050.
  • Between 2070 and 2100, floods are expected to affect 2.4 million Egyptian citizens.

Research Study

  • The aim of the study is to assess the knowledge of university students regarding climate change.
  • The study will use a descriptive design and will be carried out in the Faculty of Nursing at Kafrel Sheikh University, Egypt.
  • A random sample of 500 nursing students will be selected to participate in the study.

Data Collection

  • A structured interviewing questionnaire will be used to collect data, which will consist of two parts:
    • Part 1: Personal characteristics of university students (e.g. gender, academic year, residence, family size, Family Crowding Index).
    • Part 2: Students' knowledge regarding climate change (8 items, including meaning, environmental problems, health impacts, and ways to eliminate climate change).

Scoring System

  • A correct answer will score 1, and an incorrect answer will score 0.
  • A total score of ≥ 60% will be considered satisfactory knowledge, and < 60% will be considered unsatisfactory.

Climate Change Impacts

  • Climate change leads to long-term shifts in temperature and weather patterns, resulting in extreme weather events, health problems, and biodiversity loss.
  • Public awareness of climate change consequences is low but vital for prompting action and adaptation strategies.

Nursing and Climate Change

  • Nurses play a critical role in addressing climate change by advocating for vulnerable populations, promoting sustainable healthcare practices, and raising awareness about health risks involved.
  • Nurses contribute to healthier environments by ensuring access to clean air, water, and safe sanitation, ultimately working to mitigate the health impacts of climate change.

Global Health Impacts

  • Between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to cause approximately 250,000 additional deaths per year from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea, and heat stress.
  • Direct damage costs to health are estimated to be $2-4 billion per year by 2030.
  • In Egypt, extreme weather conditions are already a reality, with over 100 deaths due to extreme summer heat waves in 2015.

Assessing the knowledge of university students regarding climate change and its impacts, including infectious diseases and floods, as predicted by the World Health Organization (WHO).
