Study Notes
Cleaning Process of Reactors and Coolers
- R-201, R-202, R-203 (Reactors) and E-201, E-202, E-203 (Reactor Effluent Coolers) require cleaning when fouled with polymer buildup.
- Polymer fouling is identified by hot spots, increased differential pressure, or high equipment fouling levels.
Cleaning Materials and Equipment
- Cleaning is performed using solvents, including C12s, C14s, C16s, or C18s.
- Solvent for Units 1797 and 1798 is stored in TK-54 (Wash Solvent Storage Tank), found in the 1795 Tank Farm.
Process Steps
- Cleaning involves a batch operation; the reactor and cooler are taken offline.
- Catalyst flow to R-201 is halted by closing the flow control valve before initiating the cleaning process.
- An injection line is flushed with C14 product from D-450 (C14 Reflux Drum) and pumped into R-201 using P-450 (T-450 Reflux Pump).
Purging and Pressurization
- R-201 is purged with ethylene to D-310A/B (Reactor Effluent Separator) to clear out residual product.
- The reactor is depressurized and isolated at R-201 inlet and E-201 outlet.
- Pressure is equalized with D-600 (Solvent Surge Drum) before solvent circulation begins.
Solvent Circulation
- P-600A/B (Solvent Circulation Pumps) starts on minimum flow bypass to recirculate solvent back to D-600.
- Solvent flows through R-201, E-201, F-600A/B (Solvent Strainer), and returns to the surge drum.
Temperature Control
- 400 psig sparge steam is utilized to maintain a consistent temperature in R-201 during washing.
Completion of Cleaning
- After circulation, solvent is purged out of R-201 using ethylene from D-330 (Recycle KO Drum) outlet.
- Collected solvent is routed to D-620 (Clean Solvent Drum), with any entrained solvent reclaimed via E-620 (Solvent Vent Condenser).
- Ethylene purge from D-600 is cooled in E-610 (Solvent Condenser), condensing solvent into D-620.
Restoring Operations
- Upon completing the wash cycle, R-201 is prepped for service, heating is initiated using 400 psig steam if necessary.
- Ethylene feed is restored and catalyst injection resumes in R-201.
Handling Spent Solvent
- Spent solvent in D-600 is transferred to D-610 (Solvent Blow Down Drum) after settling.
- Clean up operations permit replenishment of solvent from Unit 1795 TK-54 to D-620.
- Clean solvent in D-620 is pumped to fill D-600, preparing the system for the next operational cycle.
