CLE 10: Mary, Mother and Model of the Church

• The topic is Unit VIII, "The Blessed Virgin Mary and the Church Ministry to Renew the Society".
• The lesson focuses on Mary as Mother and Model of the Church.

Objectives of the Lesson:

• Explain Mary's role in the Church as Mother and Model for Christ's disciples.
• Discuss the special graces given to Mary to fulfill her role as God's Mother and intercessor.
• Enumerate ways to practice Mary's virtues at home and in the community, emphasizing social responsibility.

Song Analysis Formative Activity:

• The activity includes guide questions aiming to have students reflect on the essence of the Blessed Virgin Mary
• Whom is the song addressed?
• Which lines of the song are most striking?
• Why does a person persist in your mind and heart?

Mary as Mother and Model

• Being cared for by one's mother is a valuable experience.
• Mary is the none other than Mary, and the model of the perfect mother.
• Some young people yearn for someone to nurture their mental, emotional, and spiritual growth.

Gospel Reading: Jesus and Mary at Calvary (John 19:25-27)

• The scripture talks about Jesus sees his mother Mary, Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene at his feet being crucified at Calvary.
• Jesus tells his mother, "Woman, here is your son," and tells the disciple, "Here is your mother."
• From that hour, the disciple took her into his own home.

Questions to Consider:

• Who was present at the foot of the cross during Jesus' agony?
• What is the meaning of Jesus' words to His Mother and St. John?
• Why are these statements significant to the members of the Church?

Closure Activity:

• Make an acronym using the word "I-N-A-Y" based on the lesson.

Marian Dogmas and Veneration

• Catholics have different forms of worship and veneration.
• DMWMF
• Latria - The supreme worship allowed to God alone (Holy Trinity).
• Hyperdulia - Veneration dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is higher than dulia but lower than latria.
• Dulia - Reverence paid to all saints.
• Protodulia - The reverence paid to Saint Joseph.
• As Mother and Model, Mary cooperates in the saving mission of Jesus Christ.
• Filipinos are described as "pueblo amante de Maria" (people in love with Mary).
• The Virgin Mary played a vital role in salvation.

The Four Marian Dogmas:

• Early Church upheld the Council of Ephesus in 431 A.D.
• Mary's Divine Motherhood, being the Mother of God.
• Her Perpetual Virginity, upheld by the Church Fathers.
• Her Immaculate Conception was formally defined by Pope Pius IX in 1854
• Her Assumption, Body & Soul, formally defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950

The Church’s Teachings:

• The Church teaches the Mary is the Mother and Model
• Mary is the symbol of the New People of God.
• She is the "Mother of Jesus Christ" and thus, the Head of the Church.
• Mary is seen as a spiritual mother to whom one can turn to in times of need.

Mary and Virtue:

• Mary is the model of virtue, evangelized, and first evangelizer (cf. PCP II 145 – 152).

Moral Doctrine:

• Mary is a model of Christian Work ethic including:

• Diligence

• Truthfulness

• Excellence

• Service

• Mary is a model in following the Decalogue (Ten Commandments), especially the first and second commandments.

• Mary is also a perfect model of obedience.

• The fourth commandment to honor your parents.

• The value of giving the Blessed Virgin Mary as the vessel of salvation.

Rosary:

• The mysteries of the Rosary are a time to reflect

• The Rosary includes

• Joyful

• Luminous

• Sorrowful

• Glorious

• Monday after Pentecost honors Mary as Mother of the Church.

St. Francis of Assisi’s Vision:

• There existed a vision of ladder to heaven through Mary is most easy the climb.
