Flashcards

Clavicle

The collarbone, a long bone lying horizontally that connects the shoulder blade to the sternum.

Clavicle Structure

The clavicle has two main ends, the medial (sternal) and the lateral (acromial), and a curved shaft.

Medial (Sternal) End

The medial end connects to the breastbone (sternum) through a specialized joint called the sternoclavicular joint.

Lateral (Acromial) End

The lateral end connects to the acromion process of the scapula (shoulder blade) forming the acromioclavicular joint.

Study Notes

Clavicle Overview

  • Collarbone, located horizontally
  • No medullary cavity
  • Membrocartilaginous ossification
  • May be pierced by a cutaneous nerve (intermediate supraclavicular nerve)

Clavicle Parts

  • Two ends (medial/sternal & lateral/acromial)
  • Shaft

Clavicle Shaft

  • Curved (medial 2/3rd round & convex, lateral 1/3rd flattened & concave)
  • Flattened inferior surface
  • Subclavian groove in middle third

Clavicle Medial/Sternal End

  • Saddle-shaped articular surface
  • Sternoclavicular joint with the manubrium
  • Fibrous attachment
  • Articulation disc
  • Interclavicular ligament

Clavicle Lateral/Acromial End

  • Flattened, downward facing
  • Oval facet articulates with medial margin of acromion
  • Acromioclavicular joint
  • Fibrous capsule attachment

Clavicle Additional Features

  • Subcutaneous throughout
  • First to ossify, last to completely ossify at about 25 years old
