    Classes of Subordinate Substantive Clauses

    • Subordinate clauses with a verb in a personal form: The verb must be in a personal form; it needs a subordinating element (e.g., "que," "com"). The indicative mood is used when the main clause indicates certainty, perception, or communication. Subjunctive is used when the main clause expresses doubt, desire, or subjective judgments. Subjunctive is also used even if the main verb is in the indicative mood.

    • Subordinate clauses with a verb in a non-personal form (infinitive): When a subordinate clause is interrogative, the infinitive is used with "si" or an interrogative word. To distinguish between a verbal phrase and a substantive clause, you can substitute a personal form of the verb with "que" or a noun phrase.

Subordinate clauses without a subordinating element

    • These clauses do not use a subordinating conjunction. The clauses are introduced by infinitives. Examples include clauses where the main verb is "aspirar" (to aspire).

Subordinate clauses introduced by a conjunction

    • Clauses are introduced by conjunctions like "que" or "si." These conjunctions function solely to introduce the subordinate clause; they don't carry other grammatical functions within the clause.

Subordinate clauses with interrogative or exclamatory words

    • These clauses use interrogative or exclamatory words (e.g., pronouns, adverbs) that introduce the clause. These words perform grammatical functions within the subordinate clause.
    • Declarative: These clauses can be introduced by "que" and a personal verb, or an infinitive without an extra element. Examples are, "Quiero que me contraten" and "Quiero tener trabajo".
    • Interrogative indirect: These clauses ask questions about the truth of the subordinate clause. They are commonly introduced by "si" and are either total (asking about the entire clause) or partial (asking about a part of the clause).
    • Exclamative indirect: These clauses express exclamation about the truth of the subordinate clause. They are almost always partial, and always have a personal verb form or an infinitive. An example would be "Mira quién ha venido".
