Study Notes

Salivary Glands

  • Classified into two types based on size and location: major salivary glands and minor salivary glands

Minor Salivary Glands

  • Located in various parts of the oral cavity, including:
    • Labial
    • Lingual
    • Palatal
    • Buccal
    • Glossopalatine
    • Retromolar
  • Present in the submucosal layer and open onto the mucosal surface through short ductal openings

Major Salivary Glands - Three Pairs

  • Parotid gland
  • Submandibular gland
  • Sublingual gland
  • Located outside the oral cavity, with secretion reaching the mouth through the ductal system

Parotid Gland

  • Largest major salivary gland
  • Weighs about 15 grams
  • Superficial portion lies in front of the external ear, with the deeper part filling the retromolar fossa
  • Parotid duct (Stenson duct) connects the parotid gland to the buccal mucosa, adjacent to the maxillary second molar
  • Anatomical structures associated with the parotid gland include:
    • Zygomatic arch (superior border)
    • Sternocleidomastoid (posterior border)
    • Masseter (anterior border)
    • Buccinator

Submandibular Gland

  • Second largest salivary gland, also called submaxillary salivary gland
  • Divided into superficial and deep parts
  • Submandibular duct (Wharton duct) connects the submandibular gland to the floor of the mouth
  • Anatomical structures associated with the submandibular gland include:
    • Submandibular duct
    • Cut edge of mandible
    • Mylohyoid muscle
    • Deep part of submandibular gland
    • Superficial part of submandibular gland
    • Posterior belly of digastric muscle
    • Digastric triangle
    • Anterior belly of digastric muscle

Sublingual Gland

  • Smallest of the major salivary glands
  • Located between the floor of the mouth, below the mucosa, and above the mylohyoid muscle

Liver

  • Largest gland in the body
  • Located under the right costal margin, with the right hemidiaphragm separating it from the pleura, lungs, pericardium, and heart
  • Extensions include:
    • Right Lobe (largest lobe, separated from the left lobe by the fossae for the gallbladder and the inferior vena cava)
    • Left Lobe (smaller, flattened lobe)
    • Caudate Lobe (positioned between the fissure for the ligamentum venosum and the inferior vena cava)
    • Quadrate Lobe (located between the gallbladder and the fissure for the ligamentum teres hepatis)
  • Surfaces of the liver include:
    • Diaphragmatic surface (in the anterior, superior, and posterior directions)
    • Visceral surface (in the inferior direction)

Blood Circulation through the Liver:

  • Blood vessels conveying blood to the liver include:
    • Hepatic artery (30%)
    • Portal vein (70%)
  • Hepatic artery brings oxygenated blood to the liver, and the portal vein brings venous blood rich in the products of digestion
  • Arterial and venous blood is conducted to the central vein of each liver lobule by the liver sinusoids
  • Central veins drain into the right and left hepatic veins, which open directly into the inferior vena cava
