Study Notes
Homogenous Mixtures
- Composed of two or more substances uniformly distributed throughout.
- Example: Saltwater where salt dissolves evenly in water.
Heterogeneous Mixtures
- Contain different substances that remain distinct from one another.
- Always exhibit more than one phase, meaning different parts can be identified easily.
- Can exist as suspensions or colloids, depending on the particle size and behavior in a medium.
Suspensions
- A type of heterogeneous mixture with solid particles that may remain momentarily suspended in a liquid.
- Requires mechanical agitation (e.g., shaking) to maintain particle dispersion.
Colloids
- Mixtures appearing homogeneous but are technically heterogeneous due to the size of their particles.
- Exhibit properties of both solutions and suspensions yet remain visually uniform.
Solutions
- Defined as homogeneous mixtures with two or more components that are evenly distributed.
- Consist of a solute (the substance being dissolved) and a solvent (the substance doing the dissolving).
- Can be categorized into three types: gaseous, liquid, and solid solutions, based on their state.
