Classification of Matter
- Matter is defined as anything that has mass and occupies space.
- The smallest particle of matter is an atom.
- All forms of matter are composed of atoms.
Types of Matter
- Matter can be classified mainly into four categories:
- Element: A simple substance consisting of one type of atom, which cannot be broken down further. Examples include helium, hydrogen, copper, and iron.
- Compound: Composed of two or more different elements that are chemically bonded. Common examples are table salt, sugar, water, and hydrogen peroxide.
- Homogeneous mixture (or solution): A mixture where components are uniformly distributed and cannot be distinguished.
- Heterogeneous mixture: A mixture where components are distinguishable and do not share a uniform composition. Examples include salad and cereal with milk.
Characteristics of Mixtures and Substances
- A mixture consists of two or more substances that are chemically different and can be easily separated, like sugar and salt.
- A pure element consists of atoms of the same type with only one isotope present.
- A pure compound is made up of two or more elements in a consistent ratio that does not change.
- A pure substance contains only one type of particle.
Categorization Examples
- White grape juice: classified as a homogeneous mixture.
- Open bottle of beer: classified as a homogeneous mixture.
- Water with ice cubes: classified as a heterogeneous mixture.
- Fresh garden salad: classified as a heterogeneous mixture.
