Study Notes

Classification of Heterotrophs

  • Heterotrophs are classified into different types based on their eating habits.
  • Herbivorous animals obtain food only from plants, e.g., cow, sheep, goat, deer, elephant, kangaroo, giraffe.
  • Carnivorous animals obtain food by killing other animals, e.g., tiger, lizard, lion.
  • Omnivorous animals consume plants and other animals for nutrition, e.g., bear, dog, human beings.
  • Parasites obtain their food from other animals, either by living inside (endoparasites) or outside (ectoparasites) their body, e.g., tapeworm, roundworm, tick, lice.
  • Scavengers feed on the remains of dead animals, e.g., vulture, crow, jackal.

Process of Nutrition

  • The process of nutrition involves five stages: Ingestion, Digestion, Absorption, Assimilation, and Egestion.
  • Ingestion is the taking in of food into the body.
  • Digestion is the breakdown of food into smaller, soluble substances.
  • Absorption is the process of taking in the digested food into the living organism.
  • Assimilation is the process where absorbed nutrients are converted to useful substances.
  • Egestion is the removal of undigested food from the body.

Nutrition in Amoeba

  • Amoeba is a unicellular organism that does not have definite organs for egestion.
  • It uses vacuoles to excrete waste.
  • Amoeba takes in food by engulfing it with its pseudopodia.
  • Digestion and absorption occur within the vacuoles.
  • The absorbed nutrients are then assimilated into the cell's cytoplasm.

Learn about the different types of heterotrophs, including herbivorous and carnivorous animals, and their varying modes of feeding. Understand how they obtain their food and the classification of heterotrophs based on their eating habits.
