Linear Equations
- A linear equation is an equation in which the highest power of the variable(s) is 1.
Rule of Transposition
- The rule of transposition states that if two statements are equal, then they can be rearranged by adding or subtracting the same value to both sides of the equation, or by multiplying or dividing both sides of the equation by the same non-zero value.
Solving Linear Equations
- To solve the equation 2p + 4 = 8, subtract 4 from both sides to get 2p = 4, then divide both sides by 2 to find p = 2.
- To solve the equation 5 - 3y = -7, add 3y to both sides to get 5 = 3y - 7, then add 7 to both sides to get 12 = 3y, and finally divide both sides by 3 to find y = 4.
- To solve the equation 2a/5 - 4 = 6, add 4 to both sides to get 2a/5 = 10, then multiply both sides by 5 to get 2a = 50, and finally divide both sides by 2 to find a = 25.
