Flashcards

Class 1A Drug Function

Class 1A drugs prolong the action potential (AP) and the refractory period (RP) by blocking potassium (K+) channels, plus some sodium (Na+) channels.

Class 1A Drug Use

Used to treat both ventricular and atrial tachycardias.

Class 1A Drug Dissociation

Class 1A drugs have intermediate dissociation rate resulting in a moderate effect on the heart.

Class 1A Side Effects

Class 1A drugs can cause anticholinergic side effects, especially disopyramide. They can sometimes reduce the heart's pumping strength (negative inotropic effect) due to less calcium entry.
