Class 10 Science Chapter 6: Life Processes
In this chapter of class 10 science, students explore life processes such as excretion, nutrition, respiration, metabolism, and transportation. These essential functions allow organisms to survive, grow, reproduce, respond to their environment, and maintain homeostasis. Here's some more information on each process:
Excretion
Excretion is the process by which waste products are removed from our bodies. This is necessary because waste can build up inside us if it isn't removed. Some examples of wastes produced within cells of living organisms include carbon dioxide, ammonia, and urea. Our kidneys handle much of the body's waste, with about 95% being eliminated through urine.
Nutrition
Nutrition involves taking food into your body so you can get energy and materials to live. Food contains nutrients like protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, water, fiber, and other things. Plants make sugars using light from the sun. Animals eat plants or animals that have eaten plants. Humans need calories from sugars, starches, proteins, or fats every day to keep going.
Respiration
Respiration is how we get oxygen out of air and put carbon dioxide back in. We breathe in oxygen, and our cells use it to break down food for energy. Then they release carbon dioxide into blood vessels near our lungs. Blood carries the carbon dioxide away to our lungs where we let it out when exhaling. Oxygen goes into the red blood cell and attaches itself to hemoglobin—the thing it latched onto in the lung cell.
Metabolism
Metabolism is all the chemical reactions that happen in living cells. It includes everything from making new cells to breaking down old ones. Most importantly, metabolic reactions convert food into energy. When these reactions don't go right, a person has a disease called diabetes. Diabetics must take special foods and medicines to control their illness.
Transportation
Transportation is moving something around quickly. In living things, blood moves oxygen and food to all parts of the body. Blood comes from the heart and goes to veins and arteries. Water also helps transport food, oxygen, and hormones throughout the plant. Absorption happens when food passes through the wall of intestines into blood vessels and is sent to all partsof the body.
These five basic processes form a chain of events that allows all living creatures to function properly. Each one depends on the others to work well. So, without any one of them, life would be impossible!
