Study Notes
Speed of Light
- Speed of light in vacuum is approximately 3 x 10⁸ m/s.
Types of Mirrors
- Concave Mirror: Spherical mirror with an inward-curved reflecting surface, facing the sphere's center.
- Convex Mirror: Spherical mirror with an outward-curved reflecting surface.
Light Perception
- Objects reflect light that falls on them, allowing us to see when reflected light reaches our eyes.
Mirror Components
- Pole (P): Geometric center of the curved mirror, referred to as the center of the reflecting surface.
- Center of Curvature (C): Center of the sphere from which the mirror segment is derived.
- Radius of Curvature (R): Radius of the sphere of which the curved mirror is part.
- Principal Focus (F): Point where parallel light rays converge (concave mirror) or appear to diverge (convex mirror).
- Focal Length: Distance from the pole (P) to the principal focus (F) of the curved mirror.
Image Formation in Concave Mirrors
- At Infinity: Real, inverted, highly diminished image formed at the principal focus.
- Between Infinity and Center of Curvature: Real, inverted, diminished image formed between the principal focus and center of curvature.
- At Center of Curvature: Real, inverted image of same size as object, formed at center of curvature.
- Between Principal Focus and Center of Curvature: Real, inverted, enlarged image formed beyond the center of curvature.
- At Principal Focus: Real, inverted, highly enlarged image formed at infinity.
- Between Pole and Principal Focus: Virtual, erect, enlarged image formed behind the mirror.
Image Formation in Convex Mirrors
- At Infinity: Virtual, erect, highly diminished image formed at the principal focus behind the mirror.
- Between Pole and Infinity: Virtual, erect, diminished image formed between the principal focus and pole behind the convex mirror.
Types of Images
- Real Images: Always inverted, can be projected on a screen. Typically produced by concave mirrors, except when objects are between the pole and the principal focus.
- Virtual Images: Always erect, cannot be projected on a screen. Produced by convex mirrors.
Functionality of Mirrors
- Concave mirrors function as converging mirrors, focusing light.
