    Study Notes

Animals can be classified into two main groups based on their skeletal structure: those with backbones (vertebrates) and those without them (invertebrates). Vertebrate animals have a bony or cartilaginous rod running along their spine called a vertebrae. This classification is important because it helps biologists understand how different types of animals move and work. Here's more information about these kinds of organisms:

    Cartilaginous Fishes

These marine creatures have flexible bones made from skinny tissue instead of bone. They don’t spend time out of water like some other fish do. Examples of this kind of animal include sharks and rays. Their bodies are streamlined so they can swim quickly through the ocean. Some species dwell deep down, while others live close enough to shore where people catch them. These fish are cold blooded, meaning they rely on their environment to control their body temperature.

    Bone Fish

Fish with hardy bones live underwater or sometimes come onto land to breed before going back into the water. Like mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and many insects, these fishes have spines that run all along their backs. Most are warm blooded, which means they make heat inside themselves using food energy. Many of these fish live near fresh water lakes and rivers.

    Reptiles

Reptiles have scaly skins and lay eggs outside their bodies. They also have tough, thick scales that protect their soft insides. Turtles and snakes are good examples of reptiles.

Some reptiles live in trees, but most pounce around on rocks or sand. A lot of them eat plants, bugs, worms, snails, crabs, and even smaller reptiles and fish. In wintertime, many reptiles hide under leaves, grasses, or burrows underground. When spring comes, they wake up hungry! Then they go looking for something tasty to eat.

    Mammals

Mammals are like us—they have fur, feathers, or hair to keep them warm. They feed their babies milk when they first arrive. Mammals range from little mice and shrews to huge elephants, giraffes, and walruses. Mammals share some traits with other animals, such as having limbs to walk or climb with, and eyes and ears to see and hear things happening around them. But each group has its own special ways of living too. For example, bats fly through the night air by flapping their wings; seals dive beneath the waves by swimming with their arms; squirrels jump around tree branches; hamsters dig tunnels in dirt floors; and owls hunt small creatures in the dark.

Vertebrates might seem pretty simple on the surface, but scientists continue to study and learn new facts every day. There are always new mysteries waiting just around the corner!.
