Study Notes
Attributes in Autodesk AutoCAD
- Attributes are information attached to blocks that can be retrieved and processed by other programs for various purposes.
- Attributes can be used to create estimates, schedules, and bills of materials in Civil Engineering.
Defining Attributes
- Attributes can be defined for either objects before creating a block or for existing blocks.
- Command line: ATTDEF (Attribute Definition) is used to define attributes.
- Attribute modes:
- INVISIBLE: Attribute values are not visible or printed when inserting the block.
- CONSTANT: Attribute has a fixed value and cannot be changed after block insertion.
- VERIFY: Allows verifying the attribute value when inserting a block by asking twice for the data.
- PRESET: Allows creating an attribute that is automatically set to the default value.
- LOCK POSITION: Locks the location of the attribute within the block reference.
- MULTIPLE LINES: Specifies that the attribute value can contain multiple lines of text.
Creating and Inserting Blocks with Attributes
- To create a block with attributes, select objects and attribute definitions altogether at the time of block creation using the command BLOCK or WBLOCK.
- When inserting a block with attributes, the value of the attributes can be specified during block insertion.
- System Variable ATTDIA determines whether a dialog "Edit Attributes" or a command line prompt appears during block insertion.
Managing and Editing Attributes
- Command line: BATTMAN (BLOCK ATTRIBUTE MANAGER) is used to manage attribute definitions for blocks in the current drawing.
- Command line: EATTEDIT is used to edit values of attributes in a block.
- The ATTEDIT command is used to change attribute values for a block.
- The ATTDISP command is used to change the visibility of all attribute values.
Extracting Attributes
- Command line: EATTEXT or DATAEXTRACTION is used to extract attributes.
- Extracted attributes can be used to create estimates, schedules, and bills of materials in Civil Engineering.
