Civil Engineering Services for Construction Projects: Phase-wise Overview

Civil engineering services are required for each of five typical phases of a construction project.

In the Final Design Phase, preparation of construction drawings and estimated construction cost are not included as part of the services.

The Construction Phase involves providing advice and consultation on matters related to the bidding or negotiating process.

Special services in a construction project can only be provided by the client.

The Study and Report Phase includes the preparation of conceptual design and opinions of probable construction cost.

The Operation Phase includes assistance to the client in the start-up and operation of the project but excludes periodic inspections.

During the Preliminary Design Phase, the Civil Engineer may need to consult with governmental authorities to approve the design of the project.

The Civil Engineer does not need to assist the client in obtaining any additional data or services during the project phases.

The client's requirements for the project are not important in the services provided by the Civil Engineer during the phases.

The Preliminary Design Phase involves preparing final design criteria, preliminary drawings, outline specifications, and written descriptions of the project.

The Civil Engineer does not need to present alternative solutions to the client during any phase of the project.

In the Preliminary Design Phase, consulting with the client and reviewing preliminary reports are not considered part of the services provided.
