Study Notes
Chapter 10 - Circulatory System
- Cardiovascular System: Heart, Blood Vessels
- Lymphatic System: Lymph Vessels, Nodes
- Circulatory System: Transportation (gases, nutrients, wastes) Regulation (hormones) Protection/Defense (immunity, injury)
Pulmonary Circulation
- Arteries: Blood vessels carrying high pressure blood away from heart
- Thick walls: to maintain blood pressure
- Pulse: Change in diameter of artery when blood flows through
- Bulged weak artery wall = aneurysm: not dealt with
- Too much fat (High LDL) -> build up in endothelium (inner layer) -> fibrous growths
- of calcium/other minerals build up on lipids -> plaque (atheroma)
- Blood package = atherosclerosis
- (thrombosis) reducing oxygen/nutrients delivery to tissues. Cause heart attacks (in coronary arteries) or stroke/dot breaks
- Embolization to brain blood vessels
Systemic Circulation
- Veins and Venules: Blood vessels, return blood to heart
- Not high pressure:
- 4-way valves: prevent blood from flowing in wrong direction, increasing pressure in veins
- Skeletal Muscles: push blood to heart (contract, increasing pressure)
- Older age = elasticity in veins: Over time, blood can pool in vein -> damaging valves (varicose veins)
Heart
-
Heart pumps: circulating blood throughout body
-
Pericardium: Fluid-filled membrane that surrounds heart; reduces friction
-
Chambers of heart:
-
2 Atria (left/right atrium): Thin walled chambers that get blood from veins
-
2 Ventricles (right/left): Thick walled chambers gives blood to arteries
-
Septum: Wall of muscle separates left/right side of heart
-
Valves:
-
Atrioventricular (AV Valves)
-
Separates atria from ventricles
-
Prevents blood flow back to atria
-
Right tricuspid valve
-
Left bicuspid/mitral valve
-
Supported by bands of connective tissue; chordae tendinae
