Overview
The circulatory system, also known as the cardiovascular system, is a complex network of organs and vessels responsible for transporting blood throughout the body.
Functions
- Transports oxygen and nutrients from the lungs and digestive system to cells and tissues
- Removes waste products from cells and tissues
- Regulates body temperature
- Maintains blood pressure
- Supports immune function
Components
Heart
- Muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body
- Divided into four chambers: left and right atria, and left and right ventricles
- The heartbeat is regulated by the sinus node, a group of cells in the right atrium
Arteries
- Elastic tubes that carry oxygenated blood away from the heart
- Divided into two main categories:
- Elastic arteries (e.g., aorta): stretch to accommodate blood pressure
- Muscular arteries (e.g., arterioles): regulate blood flow to specific areas
Veins
- Less muscular tubes that carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart
- Contain one-way valves to prevent backflow
Blood Vessels
- Capillaries: thin, permeable vessels where oxygen and nutrients are exchanged with cells
- Venules: small veins that collect blood from capillaries
Blood
- Liquid tissue that transports oxygen, nutrients, and waste products
- Composed of:
- Plasma (liquid portion)
- Formed elements (red and white blood cells, platelets)
Blood Circulation
- Deoxygenated blood returns to the heart through veins
- Blood is pumped to the lungs for oxygenation
- Oxygenated blood is pumped to the rest of the body through arteries
- Blood flows through capillaries, exchanging oxygen and nutrients for waste products
