Study Notes

Overview

The circulatory system, also known as the cardiovascular system, is a network of organs and vessels that transport blood throughout the body.

Functions

  • Transports oxygen and nutrients from the lungs and digestive system to the body's cells
  • Removes waste products, such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid, from the body's cells
  • Regulates body temperature
  • Maintains healthy blood pressure
  • Supports immune function by transporting white blood cells to areas of the body where they are needed

Components

  • Heart: a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body
  • Arteries: blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood away from the heart
  • Veins: blood vessels that carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart
  • Capillaries: tiny blood vessels where oxygen and nutrients are exchanged with the body's cells
  • Blood: a liquid tissue that carries oxygen, nutrients, and waste products throughout the body

Blood Flow

  • Pulmonary circulation: the flow of blood from the heart to the lungs to pick up oxygen and release carbon dioxide
  • Systemic circulation: the flow of blood from the heart to the rest of the body to deliver oxygen and nutrients
  • Coronary circulation: the flow of blood to the heart muscle itself

Blood Pressure

  • Systolic pressure: the pressure exerted by the blood on the artery walls when the heart beats
  • Diastolic pressure: the pressure exerted by the blood on the artery walls when the heart is at rest
  • Hypertension: high blood pressure, which can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke

Blood Composition

  • Plasma: the liquid portion of the blood that carries proteins, nutrients, and waste products
  • Red blood cells: cells that carry oxygen throughout the body
  • White blood cells: cells that help fight infection and disease
  • Platelets: cells that help the blood to clot and stop bleeding

Learn about the components and functions of the circulatory system, including blood flow, blood pressure, and blood composition. Discover how the heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries work together to transport oxygen and nutrients throughout the body.
