Study Notes
Circulatory Disorders
Thrombosis
- Formation of a compact mass composed of the elements of the circulating blood inside a vessel or heart cavity during life.
- Causes of thrombosis: Virchow's triad
- Endothelial injury
- Alteration in normal blood flow
- Hypercoagulability
Classification of Thrombi
- By color: pale, red, and mixed
- By size: non-occlusive, occlusive, and propagating thrombi
- By type: septic or aseptic
- By site: arterial, cardiac, and venous thrombi
Thrombophlebitis and Phlebothrombosis
- Thrombophlebitis: thrombus in an inflamed vein
- Phlebothrombosis: thrombus in a non-inflamed vein
- Thrombophlebitis is less common and more likely to cause septic thromboembolism
- Phlebothrombosis is more common and occurs in calf veins, especially in heart failure and varicose veins
Fate and Complications of Thrombi
- Propagation
- Embolization
- Dissolution (in recent thrombi)
- Organization and recanalization (in older thrombi)
- Calcification of venous thrombi (phlebolith)
Embolism
- -definition: impaction of an embolus in a blood vessel
- Types of emboli:
- Fat emboli
- Gas embolism
- Tumor emboli
- Foreign body emboli
- Amniotic fluid emboli
This quiz covers various circulatory disorders, including thrombosis, embolism, ischemia, edema, gangrene, and shock, with a focus on Virchow's triad and its causes.
