Circle Terminology
- Circumference: The distance around a circle calculated as (C = 2\pi r) or (C = \pi d), where (r) is the radius and (d) is the diameter.
- Diameter: A straight line passing through the center, connecting two points on the circle; it is twice the radius.
- Radius: A line segment from the center of the circle to any point on its circumference, equal to half the diameter.
- Chord: A line segment whose endpoints lie on the circle; a special chord is the diameter.
- Arc: A portion of the circumference of a circle; defined by two endpoints and measured in degrees.
- Sector: A region enclosed by two radii and an arc; resembles a slice of pie.
- Tangent: A line that touches the circle at exactly one point; is perpendicular to the radius at the point of contact.
Circle Definitions and Concepts
- Central Angle: An angle whose vertex is at the center of the circle and whose sides intersect the circle.
- Inscribed Angle: An angle formed by two chords in a circle which have a common endpoint; its measure is half that of the central angle intercepting the same arc.
- Concentric Circles: Circles that share the same center but have different radii.
- Circumscribed Circle: A circle that passes through all the vertices of a polygon, enclosing it.
