Living as Missionary Disciples
- Discussing the concept of "Missionary Discipleship" and "Art of Accompaniment"
- Exploring the origin of these phrases in Catholic discourse.
- Examining the relevance of these concepts for today's Church.
What is a Missionary Disciple?
- All baptized members of the People of God are missionary disciples. (Pope Francis, EG)
- This means all baptized individuals, regardless of role or position within the Church, are agents of evangelization.
- Adequate evangelization requires involvement of all believers, not only professionals.
Missionary Disciples - Further Elaboration
- Pope Francis coined the term "missionary disciple" in 2013's apostolic exhortation "The Joy of the Gospel."
- His vision for the New Evangelization encompasses the entire church on mission.
- The new evangelization encourages personal involvement of every believer in the proclamation of the Gospel.
- All believers should have the skills and training to evangelize.
The Need for Accompaniment for Making Disciples
- The Church must initiate all people, especially priests, religious and laity, into the 'art of accompaniment'.
- Accompaniment practices encourage removing our "sandals' before the sacred ground of the other. (cf. Ex 3:5).
- This process reflects compassionate, healing, and liberating closeness and gaze to encourage Christian growth.
The Art of Walking with Individuals and Groups
- Accompaniment is the art of walking alongside individuals and groups on their journey toward holiness.
- This journey involves the internalization of the Gospel, encompassing each person's unique life experiences.
- The process emphasizes trust, transparency, and steady reassurance.
Leading Others Closer to God
- Spiritual accompaniment should lead individuals ever closer to God, highlighting authentic freedom through a connection with God.
- Accompaniment should not turn into therapy that fuels self-absorption but must remain grounded in the pilgrimage with Christ to the Father.
Goal: Union with God
- The purpose of creation and redemption is to be fully united with God in all aspects of existence.
- This union is accomplished through contemplating Jesus's face and fosters a participation in the ecstatic love of the Trinity.
We are all Called to Holiness
- All believers are called to the fullness of the Christian life, striving for perfection in charity (love).
- Human creation inherently connects us to love and being loved.
- The ultimate spiritual goal is union with God which embodies ecstatic knowledge and love of the Trinity.
Accompaniment is Essential to Evangelization
- Christianity is essentially relational.
- Evangelization is most effective within the framework of relationship development.
- Evangelization helps believers nurture their relationships with God and others.
- Missionary disciples support others on their journey toward conversion and deepening relationship with Jesus Christ.
We are Made in the Image of God
- God is a communion of persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), which is constituted by self-giving love.
- Humans, created in God's image, are inherently relational beings designed for communion with God and each other.
Relationships Are the Norm
- Relationships are foundational to human experience, not an occasional need.
- People are designed for relational harmony and closeness.
- Strong relationships are a vital component in our lives and play a key part in our growth and development.
Accompaniment Calls Us To Engage in the Lives of Others
- God chose to be incarnate to accompany people and walk alongside them as the ultimate example of accompaniment.
- His incarnational way to lead us to himself is vital in guiding and deepening our approach to helping others toward him.
The Scriptural Model for Growing Disciples
- The most effective approach to growing discipleships is through relationships with people, mirroring Christ's relationship with His disciples.
- Important elements of faith growth can come from: Curriculum, Knowledge of the faith , skills and doctrines are critical
- But for meaningful transformation, connection is essential.
What a Culture of Accompaniment Looks Like in the Church
- True accompaniment shifts from a transactional model (resources, information) to one emphasizing genuine connection, fostering relationship and understanding the deeper needs.
Why We Especially Need Accompaniment Now
- People crave authenticity in relationships as contrasted with the superficial illusion of connection offered by digital technologies today.
