Bites and Stings

For animal or human bites, wash the wound and call a pediatrician. The child may need a tetanus or rabies shot.

For spider bites, call a pediatrician or a poison control center, describing the spider. The pediatrician should examine any bites that become infected.

For a tick, use tweezers to grab the tick’s head and slowly pull it away.

Call a pediatrician if the child experiences a rash or fever after a tick bite.

If there is concern about a venomous snake bite, take the child to an emergency department immediately.
Other Emergencies

Call 911 or an emergency number immediately if trouble breathing, fainting, or extreme swelling occurs.

Fainting

Choking

For Infants:
- Give five quick inward and upward thrusts just above the navel and below the ribcage (modified Heimlich maneuver)
- If the infant becomes unconscious, begin CPR.

For Children:
- Give 5 back blows between the shoulder blades.
- If no rise or fall, give 5 chest thrusts in the center of the chest.
- If still no rise or fall, continue to alternate between back blows and chest thrusts.
- If the child becomes unconscious, begin CPR.
Burns and Scalds

Stop the burning process by removing the child from contact with hot water or a hot object.
-
If the child is unconscious, becoming drowsy, having convulsions, or having trouble breathing, call 911 or an emergency number.

Call a pediatrician if there is concern about the severity of the burn.
Fever
-
For children less than two months old with a rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, consult a pediatrician.

For children with other fevers, dress them in light clothing, give them cool liquids, and keep them calm.

Consult a pediatrician about fever medications.

Avoid aspirin for children as it has been linked to Reye syndrome, a serious disease that affects the liver and brain.
