Study Notes

Metal Hydroxide Precipitates

  • Iron(II) hydroxide (Fe(OH)â‚‚) forms a greenish precipitate. It oxidizes to a brown color over time.
  • Iron(III) hydroxide (Fe(OH)₃) forms a reddish-brown precipitate.
  • Aluminium hydroxide (Al(OH)₃) forms a white precipitate. This precipitate dissolves in excess sodium hydroxide forming a clear solution.

Reaction Products

  • Iron(II) nitrate + Sodium hydroxide → Iron(II) hydroxide + Sodium nitrate produces a greenish precipitate of iron(II) hydroxide and colorless sodium nitrate solution. The iron(II) hydroxide darkens to brown over time.
  • Iron(III) chloride + Sodium hydroxide → Iron(III) hydroxide + Sodium chloride yields a reddish-brown precipitate of iron(III) hydroxide and colorless sodium chloride solution.
  • Aluminium chloride + Sodium hydroxide → Aluminium hydroxide + Sodium chloride creates a white precipitate of aluminium hydroxide along with a colorless sodium chloride solution. The aluminium hydroxide is soluble in excess sodium hydroxide.
