What are the three states of matter and their characteristics?
The three states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas. In a solid, particles are tightly packed and have a fixed shape and volume. In a liquid, particles are close together but can move past one another, and it has a fixed volume but takes the shape of its container. In a gas, particles are far apart and move freely, and it takes both the shape and volume of its container.
What is the difference between a physical change and a chemical change?
A physical change is a change in the physical properties of a substance, such as shape, size, or state, without forming a new substance. Examples include melting ice or breaking a glass. A chemical change, on the other hand, is a change in the chemical composition of a substance, resulting in the formation of a new substance. Examples include burning wood or rusting of iron.
What is an element, a compound, and a mixture?
An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. It is made up of only one type of atom. A compound is a pure substance composed of two or more elements chemically combined in a fixed ratio. A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined and can be separated by physical means.
