    Study Notes

Chemistry is a broad scientific discipline dealing with matter, its composition, properties, transformations, interactions, energy changes, transfers, and conservation during chemical processes. There are three main branches of chemistry: Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry. Each branch focuses on distinct aspects of chemical science.

Organic Chemistry is concerned with compounds containing carbon atoms, especially those containing hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, silicon, selenium, tellurium, and halogens. These elements frequently appear together, forming complex molecules called organics. Many different types of functional groups can form from these combinations, giving rise to thousands of chemicals, many of which make up food sources, drugs, plastics, fibers, paints, coatings, and lubricants. Most natural products like sugars, fats, oils, vitamins, amino acids, proteins, nucleotides, hormones, antibiotics, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, etc., come under the purview of this field. Some common fields within organic chemistry are bioinorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, materials chemistry, biophysical chemistry, polymers chemistry, environmental chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and computational chemistry.

In contrast, Inorganic Chemistry deals with all other types of matter apart from Carbon Compounds. This includes metal compounds such as salts, minerals, metalloids, etc. It also covers non-metal elements like Oxygen, Nitrogen, Hydrogen, Chlorine, Bromine, Radon, Argon, Neon, Fluorine, Helium, Sulfur, Phospourus etc.. Unlike organic chemistry where it's often important to have the exact structure of a compound, inorganic chemistry relies more upon general classification so that they may be studied in their average behavior. Examples of inorganic chemistry applications include catalysts used in industrial manufacturing, solid oxide fuel cells, electrolysis, solar panels, semiconductors, computer chips, and nuclear power plants.

Physical Chemistry combines concepts from both Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry while emphasizing the mathematical modeling of various systems, along with thermodynamics, kinetics, statistical mechanics, quantum chemistry, and spectroscopy. It uses methods from physics to explain phenomena related to states of aggregates of particles, their formation, deformation, transformation into others and their movement; electromagnetic radiation, which leads to photochemical reactions; wave motions in liquids, gases, and solids; thermal effects; and the interaction between substances. One example application is determining the reaction conditions needed for the conversion of coal into gasoline, diesel oil, and synthetic liquid fuels.

The intersection points among these branches are significant because they allow chemists to understand how things work on a molecular level. For instance, Bioinorganic Chemistry involves both Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, studying the role of metals in biological systems, which helps scientists learn what kind of metals are best suited for certain medicine delivery purposes, medical implant devices, etc. Similarly, Analytical Chemistry has links to all three areas, providing information that allows researchers to decide whether a substance belongs in one area or another. All these interdisciplinary studies enrich each field by offering new insights, techniques, and tools specific to them that help improve our understanding of materials, processes, structures, and functions.
