Cheetah's Tears

  • A Zulu hunter named Edie was sitting under a tree when he saw a herd of deer grazing in a meadow.

  • Edie sees a female cheetah crawling silently toward the grazing animals, and then it pounces and catches a deer.

  • Edie envies the cheetah cubs who get food without effort and decides to steal a cub and train it to hunt for him.

  • Edie knew that a cheetah never attacks a man, so he feels safe to steal a cub.

  • At sunset, the mother cheetah hid her cubs in a thick bush and left for a stream.

  • The hunter quickly picks up his net and spear and runs into the bush to find two tiny cubs which were too young to run away and therefore easily caught.

  • The mother cheetah returned and was angry and jumped wildly, sniffing around for her babies

  • All night she cried until her tears made dark stains down her cheeks causing the village wise man Shanno to understand what had happened.

  • Shanno knew it was Edie's wicked idea, he shouted at Edie for being lazy and a thief who broke the rules of the tribe and brought dishonor
