Study Notes
ChatGPT[a] is an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI and released in November 2022. It is based on OpenAI's GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 models and has been fine-tuned using supervised and reinforcement learning techniques. ChatGPT received attention for its detailed and articulate responses across various domains of knowledge, but it has also been criticized for providing factually incorrect responses at times. ChatGPT's release increased competition in the chatbot space, leading to the creation of Google's Bard and Meta's LLaMA. ChatGPT can perform various tasks, such as writing computer programs, composing music, writing essays, and playing games.
ChatGPT's training involved supervised learning and reinforcement learning, and it uses human trainers to improve its performance. Microsoft Azure's supercomputing infrastructure powered by Nvidia GPUs was used initially, but Microsoft upgraded the infrastructure following ChatGPT's success. OpenAI collects data from ChatGPT users to fine-tune the service further.
ChatGPT has limitations, including providing nonsensical or incorrect answers at times, limited knowledge of events after September 2021, and algorithmic bias. However, it attempts to reduce harmful and deceitful responses and filters potentially racist or sexist prompts.
