Study Notes
Before Breakfast
- Fern pleads with her father, Mr. Arable, not to kill a runt piglet born the previous night, questioning the fairness of killing it simply for being smaller.
- Fern argues that the piglet couldn't help being born small and compares it to killing her if she had been born very small.
- Mr. Arable relents, giving Fern the piglet to raise, to be bottle-fed like a baby, and warns that pigs can be troublesome.
- Fern's brother, Avery, is 10 year old, and armed with an air rifle and a wooden dagger.
- Avery refers to the piglet as being no bigger than a white rat.
- Mr. Arable claims Fern saved the world from injustice by being eager and being in touch with the world, so he gave her a pig.
- Mrs. Arable provides Fern with a baby's nursing bottle and nipple to feed the piglet warm milk.
- Once on the school bus and at school, Fern names her pig Wilbur.
- When asked the capital of Pennsylvania by her teacher, Fern dreamily replies "Wilbur", and the pupils giggle.
Wilbur
- Fern cares for Wilbur by stroking him, feeding him, and putting him to bed.
- She warms his milk every morning, ties his bib, and holds the bottle for him and repeats this process in the afternoon, at supper, and before bed.
- Mrs. Arable feeds Wilbur around noontime when Fern was away in school.
- For the first few days, Wilbur lives indoors in a box near the stove and is later moved to woodshed, then outdoors at two weeks old due to Mrs Arable's complaints.
- Mr. Arable fixes a small yard for Wilbur under an apple tree with a wooden box full of straw
- Fern names her small pig Wilbur.
- Wilbur would walk to the road every morning with Fern and waited with her till the bus came.
- Wilbur would wait for Fern to come home from school in his yard.
- Fern and Avery put on bathing suits and went down to the brook for a swim, with Wilbur tagging along.

Escape
- The Zuckerman's barn is old, large, and smells of hay, manure, tired horses, patient cows, grain, harness dressing, axle grease, rubber boots, and new rope; it is warm in winter and cool in summer.
- The barn has stalls for work horses, tie-ups for the cows, a sheepfold, and a pigpen for Wilbur, and is filled with ladders, grindstones, pitchforks, monkey wrenches, scythes, lawn mowers, snow shovels, ax handles, milk pails, water buckets, grain sacks, and rat traps.
- Fern's uncle, Mr. Homer L. Zuckerman, owns the barn.
- Wilbur lives in the lower part of the barn, directly underneath the cows in the warm and comfortable barn cellar.
- Fern visits Wilbur daily and sits beside him during the long afternoons, on an old milking stool.
- Fern sat on a stool and watched Wilbur and all the animals trusted her due to how quiet and friendly she was.
- Wilbur's pen is too lonely, and he wants to explore - Goose tells him there is a loose board he can push on.
- Goose speaks rapidly and repeats herself ("dirty-little dirty-little dirty-little yard").
- Once Wilbur was in through the loose board, he felt "queer" to be out of his fence and in the big world.
- Goose encourages Wilbur to go down through the orchard, root up the sod, dig up the radishes, eat grass, and look for oats
- Wilbur set off into the orchard, pushing and digging his snout in the ground
- Mrs. Zuckerman saw Wilbur and cried out to Uncle Homer and Lurvy.
- The goose advises Wilbur to run downhill and make for the woods, or he'd be caught.
- The Cocker Spaniel joined the chase, along with Mr. Zuckerman and Lurvy.
- The other farm animals, including geese, cows, sheep, and horses, were excited by the escape.
- The Goose took command and began to give orders to Wilbur.
- The flock and sounds from the chase confused poor Wilbur, so he stopped and Mr Zuckerman caught up with a pail of warm slops.
- Goose warns Wilbur it’s a trap and a trick.
- Wilbur ignores Goose and heads toward the barn and his muddy slop.
- Zuckerman fixes the fence and captures Wilbur.
- After the escape, Wilbur feels peaceful and sleepy, and thinks to himself that he is too yound to go into the world.
Loneliness
- The next day is rainy, foiling Wilbur's plans.
- Wilbur’s plans included breakfast, talking with Templeton, a nap, digging a trench, watching flies and bees, lunchtime, sleep, scratching, thinking, and supper.
- Wilbur is alone as the animals won't play.
- Goose is sitting on eggs; lamb cannot get into the pen and doesn’t like pigs; Templeton only likes eating, gnawing, spying, and hiding.
- Wilbut calls out to Templeton, but the rat steals his breakfast.
- Lurvy mixes sulphur and molasses into Wilbur’s feed for Wilbur’s stomach problems.
- A voice offers him friendship, which excites him.
Charlotte
- Wilbur is introduced properly to that voice, a large grey spider named Charolette.
- Templeton is eating a hole in the grain bin.
- Goose is turning on her nest and chuckling to herself.
- Charlotte A. Cavatica, is near-sighted.
- Charlotte traps a fly in her web, wraps it in silk, and bites it to make it more comfortable.
- Charlotte explains she doesn't chose to eat flies but she must live and a spider must have a diet which lands on their web.
- Charlotte explains spiders have been laying for flies and bugs for thousands of years
- Charlotte claims if she did not trap bugs, they would increase and destroy the earth
- Goose mentions Wilbur does not know he is going to die at Christmastime and Zuckerman and Lurvy are planning to kill him.
- Wilbur is excited to have a new friend, but is confused how he can like her.
Summer Days
- The early summer days on a farm are fair and bring lilac blooms, apple blossoms, warm weather, school ending, and time to play and fish
- Fern visited the barn almost every day, to sit quietly on her stool.
- Swallows swoop down from their nests and scold with a "Cheeky, cheeky!"
- Work horses are hitched to the mowing machine, and fields were cut and raked with hay.
- Early summer is a jubilee time for birds with nests and eggs.
- Goose's eggs hatched, and Charlotte announced the arrival of the goslings.
- There are seven goslings, which Charlotte stated is a lucky number.
- Goose says luck had nothing to do with it and It was good management and hard work that led to producing the seven goslings.
- Templeton appears and is not trusted by many of the other animals.
- Templeton always picks objects around the farm and stores them in his home, he saves everything.
- Goose rejects one egg as a dud and states Templeton can have it - and Gander says that's fine but dont come near his goslings or there will be trouble.
- Goose pushes the unwanted egg out of the nest for Templeton as the others watch in digust.
- Wilbur is appalled that Templeton would want an junky old rotten egg - and Charlotte agrees a rat is a rat, a scoundral.
- Charlotte claims if the egg ever breaks this barn will be untenable.
- A rotten egg is a regular stink bomb states Charlotte.
Bad News
- Wilbur likes Charlotte more each day and recognizes the benefit of a spider eliminating the peskly insects.
- An old sheep stops by Wilbur and states she thinks he may be gaining weight before delivering news all pigs are murdered by the farmer.
- Turns out this was due to the regular conspiracy around here to kill you at Christmastime and Everybody is in on it.
- The old sheep states Lurry, Zuckerman, even his friend Fern’s father are involved.
- The sheep claims Fern’s father arrives with a .22 to shoot you. Charlotte promises to save him.
A Talk at Home
- Mr. and Mrs. Arable and Fern have breakfast on a sunday.
- Avery is upstairs looking for his slingshot.
- Fern relays that Uncle Homer's goslings had hatched to her parents.
- Mrs Arable found it strange the goose told TEMPLETON she did not want the egg any more - especially saying who is templeton?
- Fern states none of us like templeton much, talking about Wilbur, and Goose plus herself with Charlotte being the one who spoke at the goslings hatching.
- Charlotte is Wilburs best friend and terrebly clever she said that Wilbur adores her.
- That’s when her worried expression came out and states “I worry about Fern did you hear the way she rambled about the animals, pretending they talked? She says she likes been with her animals and is not normal.
- Mr. Arable grined and said maybe the animals so talk, and your ears are to small.
Wilbur's Boast
- A spider's web is stronger than it looks, but it needs to be maintained as inscets destroys it daily.
- Charlotte states “You have awfully hairy legs, Charlotte," said Wilbur, as the spider busily worked at her task; before Charlotte tells him the legs of a spider in detail.
- Wilbur boasts about his ability to spin a web but Charlotte states he would need real leg work.

The Miracle
- After Wilbur's failed web test, the spider waited each day till an idea came to help its friends. I’m Finally the day arrived and Charlette decides to write something for Wilbur. That people are are very gullible. That afternoon the arbales wander in Avery caught a frog then they wander towards Wilbur.
- Avery noticed Charlette and decides to capture the spider.
- Wilbur was shocked during their antics and charlette greatly relieved . Avery slipped while trying to capture the spider in a jam jar. When AVERY FAILS
- Then the animals come up from the pasture. They are the sheep, the lambs, the gander, the goose and the goselings.
- And he goes down to inspect what was happening After Lurvy cleaned the floor in the house the after noon past.
A Meeting
- The animals are called for a meeting by A spider called chartlto That was at the barn cellar
- Chartlooete starts by calling the roll by Wilbure pig Goesee And goose one the were three the goslings
- Templeton doesn’t answer .All has been noticed was going on in here the last last few .
- The zuckenma have fallen for it, and so everybody else. - Now Now I called the meeting is order.
