Characteristics of Living Things
- Living things have six key characteristics: organization, energy, environment, reproduction, growth, and adaptation.
- Organization: Living things are made of cells. Cells form tissues, tissues form organs, organs form body systems, and body systems form a whole organism. The cell is the basic unit of life.
- Energy: Living things need energy to function. Plants get energy from the sun to make their own food, while animals get energy from the food they eat. Nutrients provide the energy and materials organisms need to grow, develop, and reproduce. Metabolism is the sum of all processes in an organism to sustain life.
- Environment: Living things respond to and adapt to their surroundings.
- Reproduction: Living things come from other living things, producing new organisms of the same type. Reproduction isn't necessary for an individual organism to survive, but it is crucial for a species' continuation.
- Growth: Organisms grow and develop. Cells can be replaced when they are damaged or worn out, and body size and shape can change.
Responding to Environment
- A stimulus is anything that causes a living thing to respond.
- The reaction to a stimulus is known as a response.
Growth and Development
- Living things have the ability to replace worn out or damaged cells.
- Growth and development involve increases in size, and changes in shape.
Reproduction
- Living things arise from other living things.
- Reproduction is required for the survival of a species, not necessarily for the survival of an individual organism.
Adaptations
- Adaptations are characteristics that allow organisms to survive in their environment.
- There are two types of adaptations:
- Structural: Physical features of an organism
- Behavioral: Actions an organism takes.
