Study Notes
Characteristics of Living Organisms
- All living organisms share eight characteristics: movement, respiration, sensitivity, homeostasis, growth, reproduction, excretion, and nutrition.
- This is often remembered using the mnemonic Mrs. H Gren.
Movement
- Animals move their whole bodies to travel.
- Many animals move quickly to reach prey, for example, a cheetah can reach speeds of up to 70 mph.
- Plants can also move: they respond to sunlight by moving their leaves and to gravity by moving their roots.
- Plants move to maximize photosynthesis and access minerals in the soil.
Respiration
- Plants and animals use oxygen from the air to convert glucose into energy.
- This process is called aerobic respiration.
- This energy powers many life processes, including movement, growth, excretion, and reproduction.
- Aerobic respiration is represented by: oxygen + glucose → carbon dioxide + water + energy.
Sensitivity
- Living things respond to changes called stimuli.
- They detect changes through receptors.
- Plants detect changes in seasons.
- Animals detect changes in temperature and pressure.
- Organisms react accordingly.
Homeostasis
- Homeostasis refers to the ability to regulate internal body conditions.
- Animals have a nervous and hormonal system that allows for coordinated responses.
- Plants have hormones that work similarly.
- Homeostasis keeps body conditions constant, ensuring that enzymes function efficiently.
Growth
- Growth refers to an increase in cell size, number, or both.
- Growth is important for survival; for example, an adult animal is better defended against attack than an infant.
Reproduction
- All living organisms reproduce.
- Animals use either sexual or asexual reproduction to produce offspring.
- Plants use pollination or self-fertilization.
- Reproduction ensures species survival and prevents extinction.
Excretion
- Metabolic processes produce waste materials.
- These must be removed to prevent toxic buildup.
- Both plants and animals have mechanisms for excretion.
- The kidneys in mammals and the stomata in plants are examples of excretory organs.
- The kidneys remove excess urea in urine.
- Stomata remove excess oxygen.
Nutrition
- Energy is needed for growth and repair.
- Animals obtain energy from eating; this is called heterotrophy.
- Carnivores eat animals, herbivores eat plants.
- Plants create their own food through photosynthesis.
