Study Notes

Characteristics of Cockroaches

  • Cockroaches are brown or black-coloured insects that are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of substances such as grain, fruits, wood, paper, leather, hair, and skin flakes.
  • A cockroach's body has three regions: head, thorax, and abdomen, with three pairs of legs and one pair of antennae.
  • The body is covered with a hard, scaly layer called the exoskeleton.
  • Antennae are highly sensitive to smell and touch.
  • Cockroaches have two pairs of wings that enable them to fly short distances.
  • Their legs are long and enable them to walk, run, or climb very fast, with short, thin spikes that detect even the slightest movement in air.
  • Cockroaches walk in a triangular pattern, forwarding three legs at a time.

Checkpoint 1: Corrections

  • Earthworms have more than 10 segments in their body.
  • The eyes of a snail are located on its antennae, not foot.
  • A cockroach walks by putting forward three legs at a time, not two.

Characteristics of Fish

  • Fish are vertebrates that live in water, have no limbs, and breathe through gills.
  • They vary greatly in size, ranging from 10 millimetres to more than 10 metres.
  • Fish have an internal skeleton made up of either bones or cartilage.
  • The main part of the skeleton is the vertebral column composed of strong, small bones or vertebrae.

Cockroach Survival

  • Cockroaches are known to survive tough conditions, such as surviving without food for a month.
  • Some cockroaches can live without air for as long as 45 minutes.
